POPPET 2016

by Nina Joly

Spending the summer touring with Olympia WA artist Molly Raney, aka Poppet. The set is a two-woman, high intensity experimental electropop extravaganza. West and East coast tour dates to follow soon.

"Poppet is the bold alter-diva of California-raised musician Molly Raney. Before Poppet's genesis in 2008, Raney spent many years training in a wide variety of musical fields from western classical to jazz to choral to Hindustani (Northern Indian classical tradition) to Gamelan (Indonesian classical ensemble music). She also has an extensive background in music theory, music history, and ethnomusicology, from both her childhood lessons and her education at the University of California in Davis. She spent 7 years studying with vocal coach Dr. Rebecca Plack of the San Francisco Conservatory–a major influence on her vocal style and elasticity. This broad musical background, plus her involvement with community freeform radio station KDVS, accounts for Poppet's own sonic diversity.

Poppet creates fully orchestrated electro/baroque pop, forged through dense layers of electronic and acoustic sounds and hinging on her etherial and extraordinarily expressive voice. In 2016, dancer and choreographer Nina Joly joined Poppet's live set, integrating contemporary dance into an ominous and heartrending cycle of songs focusing on the human conscience. Nina's work has been shown by the Saint Paul Ballet, as a guest artist for the Five College Dance Department, at the American College Dance Festival, at the Check Us Out Dance Festival NYC and on international tour with the band Foxygen. In the fall of 2016, Nina will assume the position of Director of Dance at Pomfret School in Pomfret, CT."

Congrats and many thanks to the Saint Paul Ballet for their hard work on my piece "the Hounds of Love," which was performed August 5-10 as part of the 2014 Minnesota Fringe Festival. Finished video to come- in the meantime, here's a trailer!

Updates from the Twin Cities

by Nina Joly

Pleased to day good morning from Minneapolis-Saint Paul, where I'm spending the next two weeks back at the Saint Paul City Ballet. I'm getting ready to teach my first class of the studio's upper-level summer intensive, and later tonight is my first rehearsal with the cast of my new piece,  which will be a fun and swirly group dance set to Kate Bush's "Hounds of Love." Check out the hilarious video here and spin around your living room:

Speaking of vids, I've got work in two debuting this month. At the end of June i jetted down to LA for two days to shoot Foxygen's new video for the Star Power single "How Can You Really," directed by Grant Singer, who is responsible for videos for hotties like Sky Ferreira and Kendrick Lamar. We wore sparkly short-shorts and danced a million takes and hopefully it'll be a very fun vid. Look for it in the coming weeks!

Our most-dear-to-my-heart Olympia-based project Holy Komodo is also releasing a video this month, along with a bunch of new recordings, photos, a music festival, and other exciting bits and pieces, so prepare to have your world taken over. Although Holy Komodo has to take a short hiatus while Justin and I tour with Foxygen, all involved have been working really hard in preparation for releasing all of our new stuff. We also plan to tour after the new year, so keep a lookout for dates! The boys and I had a superfun time filming our video for the single "Wanna Be Ur Lady"- it'll be brimming with cross-dressing, coffee-pouring, dance partying, snakes, kissing and office dance scenes. Here's an awesome pic of us going nuts on set!

Finally, it's been exciting to learn about two cool upcoming Foxygen shows in Europe baby! On October 31, we'll have the pleasure of doing a Halloween show at the Village Underground in London which will hopefully be actually, genuinely creepy. Take a look here:

Amazingly, the following day we get to play Paris' Pitchfork Festival along with St. Vincent, Belle and Sebastian, Four Tet, Chvrches and other neat kids:

With that, it's time to put together a jazz-class-warmup playlist that high-school-age ballet dancers will hopefully be into. Thanks for reading!

Raise a Glass to the Saint Paul City Ballet...

by Nina Joly

... which was singlehandedly saved from destruction this year by my good friend and ballet master of the universe Zoé Henrot. Read about her superpowers here:

In March, I had the good fortune to travel to the Twin Cities and restage my 2010 piece "Twins" on two SPCB dancers (see videos of the original and new versions on my Video page). Here's a preview!

In July, I'll return to the midwest to create a brand-new piece on the company, to be performed at the Minnesota Fringe Festival in early August. While I'm there, I'll get to teach choreography classes each day to the SPCB students attending their annual summer intensive. Time to expand some young minds. I'll be posting updates on the progress of the piece and the students!

Foxygen Adds New Members, Also A Set of Broken Bongos

by Nina Joly

My significant other Justin Nijssen has spent the last two years as resident bassist for the much-hyped indie psychadelic-rock band Foxygen of Jagjaguwar Records, brainchild of our friend Sam France and his childhood buddy Jonathan Rado. This year I join their ranks as a touring dancer/singer/auxiliary percussionist/choreographer. We had a great time performing at Coachella 2014, which was very fun despite the 10,000-degree heat onstage and the fact that my bongos were held together with pink duct tape (by the second weekend of the festival, they had shattered completely- I was promised a new set of congas instead!).

GO BIG OR GO HOME FESTIVAL PEOPLE!

GO BIG OR GO HOME FESTIVAL PEOPLE!

Tomorrow, I fly to LA to work on and appear in the new music video for the first single on the new album STAR POWER, to be released early this fall. Pics promised!

Later this summer, Justin and I will abandon our home in the Olympia woods to tour the west coast with these guys. In the fall, we'll do coast-to-coast US and Europe baby! Look and the dates and decide to buy tickets via the following link.

Here's a vid featuring myself and the other Foxy ladies shaking it on the same stage that Lorde took over later that night. You can recognize me by my diamond-encrusted black halter and white Keds.

Here's a review of our 4/17/14 show at the Independent in San Francisco, where allegedly, someone's wife was into me. Woohoo.

See What's Been Going On!

by Nina Joly

Hi readers, many thanks for checking out my work at ninajoly.com! The past couple of years have brought several great projects, lots of fun teaching opportunities and tons of cool ideas. Here's some of what we've been up to!

May 2012

I had the pleasure of standing in as substitute Director of Dance at the Pomfret School in Pomfret, CT for Tony Guglietti while he toured eastern Europe with Sean Curran's company. The kids and I all workshopped pieces together during our afternoons in the studio, and our hard work concluded with great performances at the Spring Dance Concert- especially during Jake Lans' '12 hilarious and energetic duet, the audience was at the edge of their lawnchairs!

During May, I also spent a few days back at MHC throwing together a weird and funny little routine for the '12 graduating seniors' Commencement Concert called "Dear and Darling." Take a look at it on my "Video" page!

July 2012

The band got back together and put on a very cool reunion performance of my 2011 piece "Gobbledigook" as the finale of the 2012 Check Us Out Dance Festival in Central Park. Check out the original piece on my "Video" page, then compare it to the outdoor version! Brought to you by a few frequent flier miles, a battery-powered iHome and eight hours of rehearsal in a Columbia University classroom. Here's the vid:

November 2012

I was honored to be invited by Terese Freedman, chair of the Mount Holyoke Dance Department, back to my alma mater to serve for the semester as a Guest Artist in Dance. From September to November, I worked with freshman and sophomore dance students to create a new piece and introduce new dancers to the department. Our finished piece, "A Genuine Jig," was a joy to perform at the 2012 FCDD Fall Faculty Dance Concert. Video to come soon!

Since I relocated to Olympia, WA in 2013, new projects have been quickly piling up! Keep checking back for more news.
